Senator Barbara Anne Washington’s Legislative Column for Sept. 13, 2024

Hello Jackson County! I hope everyone has been enjoying the mild temperatures and picture perfect football weather. You know it is September in Missouri when the morning temperature is 48 degrees and the afternoon high hits 84! Some things are just consistently inconsistent in the Show-Me State!

2024 Veto Session Yields No Overrides

One thing that has remained consistent during my four years in the Missouri Senate is that the Legislature has taken no action to override the governor’s vetoes during the constitutionally mandated annual veto session. This year was no exception, but I enjoyed the opportunity to bid farewell to the retiring and termed-out senators and honor Senate staffers for their years of service.

Since this year’s veto session fell on the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, senators paused for a moment of silence to pay homage to those who lost their lives 23 years ago and show appreciation to the brave emergency responders who selflessly put their lives on the line and rushed into the World Trade Centers to save others. I am always taken aback by this solemn day in our history, but more importantly, I remain impressed and inspired by the resolve of the American people.

Welcoming Visitors to the Capitol

While I was in Jefferson City for the annual veto session, I had the chance to meet with some outstanding students who were at the Capitol to visit legislators and advocate for education.

September is Suicide Prevention Month

Each September, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration observes Suicide Prevention Month to raise awareness and reduce the stigma associated with mental illness. Missouri Chamber of Commerce Honors 2024 Business Champions

On Sept. 10, the Missouri Chamber of Commerce recognized several legislators for their pro-business legislation and advocacy. I was honored to be named a 2024 Business Champion for helping to grow the state’s economy and make Missouri a competitive place to do business.
