Senator Barbara Anne Washington’s Legislative Column for Oct. 17, 2024

A Royal Finish

Hey there, Jackson County. What an amazing run the boys in blue had this year. For the first time since the 2015 World Series, the Royals batted their way into postseason play. Congratulations to Matt Quatraro, his coaching staff and superstar players, and the faithful, boisterous fans for bringing life back to the K. I am confident we’ll be seeing playoff action again in October of 2025.

No-Excuse, In-Person Absentee Voting Begins Next Week

There is literally no excuse for eligible voters not to cast a ballot in the Nov. 5 General Election. Request a mail-in absentee ballot before Oct. 23 and vote from the privacy and convenience of your own home. You may also vote in person at one of the election authority locations beginning next Tuesday, Oct. 22 or cast a ballot the traditional way on Nov. 5. Please share this information with those who need it and make your vote count on Election Day!

The Jackson County Election Board serves voters who are outside the corporate limits of Kansas City, Missouri, but within Jackson County. Kansas City voters should contact the Kansas City Election Board. Both election boards are separate government entities.

Starlight Theater Celebrates Groundbreaking Ceremony

There is nothing more gratifying as your state senator than seeing my work in Jefferson City come to fruition in our community. On Oct. 10, I was honored to participate in the groundbreaking ceremony on the Starlight Theater’s $40 million renovation and expansion project. Made possible in part by funding I helped appropriate in the Legislature, the two-phased construction project will be completed in April of 2026 and include a canopy over the audience and other needed improvements to this historical outdoor venue.

Area leaders, construction managers and Starlight staff break ground on improvements to the theater.

Calling all Trick-or-Treaters!

Please share this flyer and join me and the KC Prospect Business Association for a safe and fun way to celebrate Halloween. We’ll be handing out candy and other treats on Lindbergh Blvd. between Prospect and Olive. I look forward to seeing your costumes and smiling faces on Oct. 31.
