Ballot Results

In the wake of the election I would like to break down the results of the various ballot measures Missouri voted on this week.

Amendment 2, which legalizes sports betting passed by a slim margin. This amendment, in addition to legalizing sports betting, would establish a 10% tax on betting revenue to help fund education and programs to fight gambling addiction. This will open the way for Missourians to bet on their favorite sports teams. However, another measure about gambling, Amendment 5, that would have given permission for a new casino at the Lake of the Ozarks, was defeated.

I am sad to say, Amendment 3 did pass in this election by a narrow margin. This amendment establishes a constitutional right to abortion, removing Missouri’s ban on abortion and allowing them to be performed in cases where the health of the mother is at risk. However, the amendment does allow for the Legislature to regulate abortion past a certain point in a pregnancy. I can promise you that clarifying and codifying strict regulations will be a top priority for me and many of my colleagues in the coming session.

I am also disappointed Amendment 6 did not pass. This would have funded sheriffs and prosecutors retirement funding through a court fees increase. It is so important these individuals who work so hard to keep Missouri safe are secure in their future, and I am sad to see that we must find a new path forward to provide for them.

I am proud that Missourians saw the wisdom in protecting our elections by passing Amendment 7. This amendment prevents the establishment of Ranked Choice Voting and prohibits non-citizens from voting in elections.

Finally, Proposition A also received a large amount of support. It will raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour over the next two years as well as require businesses to provide paid sick leave to their employees.

As with all elections there are some results we are happy with and some that we are not. It is important, as we move forward, that we keep our eyes focused on the future and what we can accomplish together as we unite as a nation. I believe in our election process and I believe in the voice of the people. Let us continue to take steps towards a better and brighter future.
