Veterans Day
This week our nation celebrated Veterans Day. This is a time to honor and recognize the sacrifices made by the military veterans of our nation. It is a day dedicated to remembering the courage, dedication and selflessness of those who have answered the call to protect our nation. Often, this service is done at great personal cost to both themselves and their families. Veterans Day is a chance for all Americans to express their gratitude for everyone who have worn the uniform of the US military and protected our nation.
The importance of Veterans Day goes beyond just acknowledging the past. It also serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggles many veterans face in society, both physically and mentally. If we are to honor veterans, we must also highlight the need for their continued support by providing resources for these men and women, many of whom carry the lasting impacts of their service long after they return home in the form of physical disabilities, mental health challenges and other debilitating factors. As a state, we must continue to support efforts to help improve care for our veterans and their families.
Veterans Day also serves as a unifying moment in American life. Much divides us as a nation, but in the celebration of those who serve our country, we can and should be united. Through ceremonies, parades or simple acts of kindness, as a nation and a state we can be united in saying ‘thank you’ to everyone who has protected our freedoms and way of life.
To everyone who has served, I say, thank you for your courage. Thank you for standing at your lonely post. Thank you for protecting us.
