Steven Roberts, D-St. Louis, issued the following statement regarding Boeing’s announcement that the company will lay off 700 Missouri workers: “St. Louis’ job growth was among the top in the country last year. Boeing’s announcement that it will cut 700 jobs in the region is a blow to that momentum. It is my hope that Boeing has a comprehensive retraining or reskilling program in place to help those displaced workers transition into new opportunities. Meanwhile, I will continue working with the Legislature to ensure economic growth continues. Revitalizing Missouri’s downtowns will be vital in this work, as they serve as the core of recruitment. A revitalized downtown St. Louis will incentivize new businesses, foster innovation and allow for a developed workforce that targets key sectors that align with the region’s strengths.” Senator Roberts’ Senate Bill 792, “Revitalizing Missouri Downtowns and Main Streets Act,” which would create a state program to incentivize the conversion of vacant office space in Missouri’s downtown areas and along Main Streets into residential space, was passed by the Senate Economic Development and Tax Policy Committee in 2024. Senator Roberts plans to refile the legislation during the upcoming legislative session. |
