First Steps
Greetings from the Missouri Capitol, where the music of the Inaugural Ball has faded. Now replaced by hundreds of conversations in the halls, gavels and testimonies in committee hearings, and the murmur of discussion and debate in full offices.
While the entire body has yet to discuss any legislation on the floor, many of the more than 600 bills before the Senate have now been referred to committee, including Senate Bills 94, 95, 96, 178, 179 and 180, which I sponsored. A long journey remains before this legislation might arrive on the governor’s desk, but it is motivating to see the momentum begin to build.
As I mentioned in my column last week, I am thrilled to be serving on several standing committees and participating in the vetting of the legislation that now sits before the body. This week I had my first committee hearing, sitting as a member of the Senate Families, Seniors and Health Committee. It was apparent very early there is a distinct difference between the Senate and Missouri House of Representatives committee hearings. However, there is one very important element that remains the same. No matter the side of the building, these hearings are our opportunities as elected officials to hear from passionate, experienced and knowledgeable people who will be most impacted by the proposed laws being considered. We owe it to everyone across the state to keep an open mind, learn as much as possible about the issues and listen to those who are taking the time to testify for and against bills.
These initial days of session have me ready for more. Busier, longer days lie ahead. I hope to bring you many more updates and success stories as the Senate works through the huge issues and obstacles facing the state. Have a great weekend!
