Martin Luther King and the Celebration of America

This week the nation celebrated two very important days for our country. The holiday celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and the inauguration of a new president.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated every year on the third Monday of January. On this day, we celebrate a man who fought valiantly for the equal rights of all Americans. Through his peaceful actions and great words, he led our nation out of one of its darkest times and is regarded as one of the greatest Americans to ever live.

Simultaneously, the nation witnessed the peaceful transfer of power from one president to another. The occasion gives us the chance to look forward, at what will be accomplished and to envision the future we hope to see. I am proud of the fact this nation continues to celebrate its freedom and democracy through the election of its leaders. Our republic continues to show it is a government by the people, of the people and for the people.

These two days do not always overlap but they did this year. Both days give us a reason to reflect - to look forward with hope. I know times are hard for many people, but I believe tomorrow will be a better day. America has worked hard to be a place where freedom and equality are celebrated, where we face the mistakes of our past and do our best to improve the future.
