This Week in the Missouri Senate This week in the Missouri Senate, activity increased rapidly as numerous bills were referred to Senate committees. Hearings have begun, giving committee members the opportunity to ask questions and gather information about proposed legislation. Committee hearings allow experts, advocacy groups and people who would be impacted by proposed legislation the chance to provide personal viewpoints and voice opinions. Hearings are open to the public, and I encourage you to get involved. If you’d like to testify on a bill I’m sponsoring, please reach out to my office. I will keep you updated on my legislation as session continues. Last week, each of Missouri’s 34 senators saw their top three bills referred to committees. More were referred this week and I am happy to say six of my sponsored bills have now been referred and are one step closer to being considered on the Senate floor: - Senate Bill 55, which prohibits schools from being members of athletic organizations that allow students to use performance enhancing drugs, was referred to the Senate Education Committee.
- Senate Bill 56, which prohibits diversity-equity-inclusion (DEI) requirements in schools, was referred to the Senate Education Committee.
- Senate Bill 57, which exempts groceries and diapers from sales tax, was referred to the Senate Economic and Workforce Development Committee.
- Senate Bill 145, my “Lemonade Stand Freedom Act,” which prevents cities from imposing a business license tax on businesses with less than $10,000 in gross receipts from sales in any calendar year, was referred to the Senate Economic and Workforce Development Committee.
- Senate Bill 146, which eliminates the individual income tax, was referred to the Senate Economic and Workforce Development Committee.
- Senate Bill 147 – which allows gun owners to carry on public transportation, along with a number of other pro-Second Amendment measures, was referred to the Senate Transportation, Infrastructure and Public Safety committee.
If you are interested in seeing these bills move through the legislative process, I encourage you to visit senate.mo.gov and click on committees. Select “Standing,” and you’ll find a list of committees. From there, you can see the members and information about what bills they consider. You can contact the chair, who decides what bills will be heard and when, and encourage them to schedule legislation for a hearing by clicking on their photo and selecting “Email the Senator” on the right hand side.
