Protecting Hazing Victims
Hello! It’s a pleasure to reach out and talk with you about what is happening in the Senate.
This week we heard from our governor in his State of the State address. He discussed a plan to gradually remove income tax, strengthen police forces, fund agriculture in the state and reassess the Foundation Formula funding Missouri’s education system. I am thankful and excited to work with him on these priorities to help make Missouri the best state in the nation.
I also presented my Senate Bill 167 to the Judiciary and Civil and Criminal Jurisprudence Committee this week. This bill expands the definition of the crime of hazing to include anyone who plans or solicits another to engage in a hazing ritual that could cause physical or mental damage. The bill also provides exceptions to students who engage in a hazing ritual, but in the case of an emergency stick around to find and provide care for anyone harmed until medical assistance arrives. I believe this will help protect college students in our state from hazing rituals but also encourage them to do the right thing in an emergency rather than abandoning someone in need for fear of punishment.
In other news, I was proud to welcome Sheila Tracy to the Capitol, where she stood before the Gubernatorial Appointments Committee in a hearing to be approved as Ray County Commissioner. It was a pleasure to stand by her side and I’m ready to see what she can provide in her new position.
