Protecting Missouri

This week has been busy with multiple bills making quick progress through committee and even the Senate floor.

The Transportation, Infrastructure and Public Safety Committee, which I chair, voted out Senate Bill 23 and Senate Bill 58. Those bills will hopefully reach the floor soon.

Senate Bill 23 creates the Second Amendment Preservation Act, which will declare any federal law that infringes on the right to bear arms as invalid. I believe this bill will help protect our right to bear arms from any federal government overreach.

Meanwhile, Senate Bill 58 works to curtail illegal immigration in Missouri by allowing the governor to more effectively assist states along the border with funds and manpower. It also increases penalties for illegal immigration in Missouri.

I also presented my own Senate Bill 134 to the Judiciary and Civil and Criminal Jurisprudence Committee this past week. This bill protects children by preventing any tier three sexual offender from entering schools or buildings where school activities take place. It also prevents these offenders from petitioning to have their name removed. Additionally, this bill would allow child victims to appear by video in court hearings rather than in person. It’s a priority of this office to protect kids.

Finally, the Senate has begun to perfect bills that have made it out of committee, including Senate Bill 59. This bill provides an income tax deduction for veteran survivor benefits, first responders, educators and to contributions to a long-term dignity savings account. Although I am not this bill’s sponsor, I support this bill and the good it will do for some of the best men and women in our communities.
