Gubernatorial Appointments

With the approval of the gubernatorial appointments this week I wanted to take some time and explain the process individuals go through to receive an appointment and confirmation.

The first step is for a potential applicant to make their interest known. In Missouri, there are 187 different boards and commissions, each with multiple members. They cover topics including education, agriculture, taxes, construction, therapy, child abuse, water and a multitude of other important subjects and needs of the state.

The selection process starts with an application. The governor has encouraged Missouri citizens who are qualified to apply for gubernatorial appointments to boards and commissions. The governor then selects someone who fulfills the requirements for the position and who he feels is best for the job. The Senate then holds a committee hearing to ask questions and determine whether the appointee is a good fit. If they approve, their name is brought to the Senate floor to be accepted. If they are not accepted within the designated time frame of thirty days, they are considered rejected and cannot be appointed for the same position again.

This week, the Senate approved several gubernatorial appointments to key boards and commissions across the state. Michael Brown, of District 21, was confirmed as the Lafayette County Southern Associate Commissioner, where he will help oversee local governance and county operations. Leisha Barry was approved to serve on the Northwest Missouri State University Board of Regents, contributing to leadership and oversight of higher education. The Senate also confirmed Robert Alpers to the Clean Water Commission, which plays a critical role in protecting Missouri’s water resources, and William Harlow to the State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors, responsible for maintaining professional standards and public health. I am proud that all of these appointees come from District 21, and I look forward to the positive impact they will have in their new roles.

I encourage anyone in the district who is interested in helping shape Missouri to go online and visit boards.mo.gov to see what is available and apply if there is a position you feel you can serve in.
