The Election Cycle

The Senate continues its work as bills are debated and voted on in the Senate chamber, and we receive bills from our colleagues in the House of Representatives.

One point of interest this week is that candidates for public office at the local and state levels had to file their intent with the secretary of state. This gives us a complete view of the people running for office in the state. For many positions like for the Missouri House of Representatives and Senate they will first be elected through a primary in August then in the general election in November.

These elections happen every two years with all state House districts, half of the state Senate districts and all of the congressional districts up for election. This election cycle there is a bit more potential turn-over than typical. With the redistricting from last year, there are a number of congressional districts with new boundaries which has changed the eligible candidates for many places in the state. I look forward to continuing my work whatever outcomes occur in the rest of the state.

In addition, the Senate Appropriations Committee continues to have hearings for the state budget. I’m not on the Appropriation Committee, but I do know they are committed to working their way through a tight budget. I know a balanced and fiscally responsible budget is one of the top priorities of Missourians across the state and I am driven to maintain the state’s streak of passing a balanced budget. I am confident they are doing all they can to accomplish this goal and that the budget is in good hands.
