Show Missouri Film and Digital Media Act Passes Missouri Senate

First, I’d like to say go Chiefs! Congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs and their fans on the team’s win in Super Bowl 57! It is exciting that Missouri is once again home to the Lombardi Trophy.

Show Missouri Film and Digital Media Act

In legislative news, my colleagues and I passed Senate Bills 94, 52, 57, 58 & 67, a legislative package that establishes various entertainment production related tax credits. I sponsored Senate Bill 67 to establish the Show Missouri Film and Digital Media Act. This legislation would provide tax credits to qualifying film production projects. I believe these tax credits will encourage these productions to film in our great state and send a message to the entertainment industry that Missouri is open for business. This legislative package now goes to the Missouri House of Representatives for consideration.

A couple of weeks ago, Lamar Johnson was finally set free after 28 years of wrongful imprisonment. Lamar was unfortunately the victim of a broken system where stories like his are all too common. The 101st General Assembly passed Senate Bills 53 & 60 in 2021 to help remedy this injustice and fix the system that failed him and so many others. Moving forward, I am hopeful more innocent Missourians are set free as a result of this law.

Delta GEMS

I had the pleasure of speaking to the young ladies of Delta GEMS (Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully). Delta GEMS is a mentoring program for young African American women in grades 9-12. This program’s goals are to instill the need to excel academically; to sharpen and enhance the skills needed to achieve high levels of academic success; to assist in proper goal setting and planning for the future, high school and beyond; and to create compassion, caring and community minded young women by actively involving them in learning and community service opportunities. I spent time with them talking about what I do as a state senator. We also discussed the importance of voting and how it relates to black history. I want to thank my sorors of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. for this amazing opportunity.

Brilliant Minds Private School

Last week, I had the honor of speaking with the students of Brilliant Minds Private School, for their Black History Month program. This school is the first Black owned and Black woman owned private school in Florissant. I want to thank Dr. Shanella Huntley for inviting me to speak at this event.

Raises for State Employees

On Feb. 22, the Senate voted to pass House Bill 14, a supplemental appropriations bill that would give state employees an 8.7% cost of living pay raise. The governor emphasized the importance of this bill in his State of the State address last month, and I believe it is a necessary increase to ensure Missouri stays competitive in the job market. The governor signed this bill into law on Monday, Feb. 27.

Restaurant Meals Program

If you know someone who is a senior, homeless or disabled who receives assistance from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), please have them contact my office at 573-751-2420 or Angela.Mosley@senate.mo.gov. On Wednesday, March 1, at 12:00 p.m., I am scheduled to present Senate Bill 313 to the Senate Progress and Development Committee. This legislation requires the Missouri Department of Social Services (DSS) to establish a “Restaurant Meals Program” as a part of SNAP. Under this program, eligible individuals may redeem their SNAP benefits to purchase hot food and ready-to-eat meals at private establishments that contract with DSS. I am looking forward to hearing from the community and gathering their thoughts on this proposal.
