The Greatest Story Ever Told
Like so many people with busy lives, I often let holidays sneak up on me. It’s so easy to be consumed by all the work and obligations that we forget to take time to consider the things that are truly important. Fortunately, the calendar prompts us to pause and reflect. Probably no date inspires as much personal reflection for me as Easter.
As we celebrate Easter, we give thanks for the sacrifice of Jesus, who gave his life for us. Although he was blameless, he was tried and convicted and hung on a cross to die. After three days, his followers visited his tomb, only to find it empty. He had risen from the dead.
The Bible describes the events surrounding Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection in detail. We learn about his celebration of the Passover and his last supper with the disciples. As Jesus confronts his own fate, those around him struggle with denial, betrayal and doubt. We feel their despair as Jesus’ body is taken down and placed in the tomb. Finally, we share the joy when his followers learn he has resurrected. There’s good reason these events have been described as “the greatest story ever told.”
If we’re honest, we can see ourselves in each of those who accompanied Jesus in his final days. We have all experienced doubt and fear. We all get caught up in our own trials and tribulations. Celebrating Easter allows us to stop, ease our mind and remember that Jesus rose from the dead. We’re reminded that we, too, have life and resurrection through him. As the Apostle Paul wrote to the Romans, “as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.”
I encourage everyone to take time this Easter season to reflect on the blessings we have received through God’s grace and the sacrifice of his son. Happy Easter everyone. He is risen!
