Guiding Bills Through the Legislative Process
On Feb. 14, the Senate voted 21-12 to pass Senate Bills 4, 42 & 89 to establish the “Parents’ Bill of Rights Act of 2023” and the Missouri Education Transparency and Accountability Portal to give Missourians access to each school district’s curriculum, textbooks, source material and syllabi. I was proud to support this legislation and send a strong message that Missouri respects parents and their right to know what their children are being taught. This legislation has been sent to the Missouri House of Representatives for deliberation, and I am hopeful my colleagues there pass this important legislation and send it to the governor’s desk for his signature.
I am proud to announce my Senate Bill 152 was voted do pass by the Senate Commerce, Consumer Protection, Energy and the Environment Committee on Feb. 14. This bill would prevent local municipalities from proposing duplicative franchise fees on streaming services. These franchise fees were intended to pay municipalities for the cost of physical infrastructure, such as the equipment needed to provide cable television service. Under this bill, “video service” does not include any video programming accessed over the internet, including streaming content. This legislation will help protect Missourians from paying duplicative fees not approved by voters.
Every day is a great day to be a Missourian, but this week, we have extra cause for celebration. Congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs for winning Super Bowl 57 and once again bringing home the Lombardi trophy. They represented our state well on the national stage, and made all of us proud to be Missourians.
