Senator Curtis Trent’s Legislative Column for the Week of March 6, 2023
This past week was a busy, but productive week here in the Missouri Senate. I had the pleasure of meeting several wonderful constituents throughout the week. While the inner workings of the Senate can be hectic and ever-changing, it is always a joy to meet with constituents and learn about their needs. Every day is an opportunity to improve the lives of Missourians across the 20th Senatorial District and the entirety of the state!
As many of you know, much of the work done in the Senate begins in committee hearings. Prior to debating a bill on the Senate floor, the bill must pass committee in order to be heard by the entire Senate. I had the opportunity to present two bills in front of two different committees this week.
In the Commerce, Consumer Protection, Energy and the Environment Committee, I had the pleasure of introducing Senate Bill 275. This act creates a state and local sales tax exemption for utilities, equipment and materials used to generate or transmit electricity. With the consumer being crushed by crippling inflation and increasing energy costs, it is essential that the General Assembly provides tax breaks to Missourians and business owners to help alleviate some economic stress. While the federal government continues on what I would call a tax and spend spree, I am choosing to give money back to the constituent.
Finally, I introduced Senate Bill 274 in the Rules, Joint Rules, Resolutions and Ethics Committee. I believe these bills will not only impact and improve the lives of those who live in the 20th District, but the entire state. With every bill I introduce it is my goal to advance liberties and freedoms for every Missourian. I thank you all for bestowing me the honor and privilege to serve you in the General Assembly.
