Senator Brian Williams
Senator Brian Williams, a Democrat, has proudly represented the 14th Senatorial District in St. Louis County since 2018, the first Black male to serve in the Missouri Senate in two decades. His commitment to public service began while studying government and public health policy, a path that led him to serve as staffer in the U.S. Congress, where he worked on major federal initiatives—including helping oversee Missouri’s rollout of the Affordable Care Act Marketplace.
During his tenure in the Missouri Senate, Sen. Williams has championed legislation that delivers meaningful, measurable impact for Missouri families. His work has included freezing property tax values on the primary residence of seniors over age 62, expanding access to lifesaving care for sickle cell anemia patients, strengthening protections for MO ABLE account holders, and supporting families involved in the criminal justice system. He also established the Capitol’s annual Human Trafficking Awareness Day, bringing statewide attention to prevention and survivor support.
Senator Williams led the passage of the state’s most comprehensive criminal justice reforms in a generation. His legislation created the strongest use-of-force database in the nation; established a statewide conviction review unit; prohibited the use of respiratory chokeholds; expanded access to free feminine hygiene products for women offenders; and shortened the timeline for individuals to request an expungement after completing their sentences. He also passed a key provision empowering prosecutors to vacate wrongful convictions – helping pave the way for the release of Missourians who were unjustly imprisoned.
As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Sen. Williams has helped secure hundreds of millions of dollars in state investment for St. Louis County. This includes:
- $80 million for the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL) “Campus of the Future” initiative, including major campus renovations and the new library project.
- Funding for the new UMSL engineering program and South Campus improvements.
- State investment for the redevelopment and revitalization of Kinloch, Missouri’s oldest incorporated Black community.
- Funding for the demolition and redevelopment of the Jamestown Mall property, addressing one of St. Louis County’s most longstanding community priorities.
- Additional resources for infrastructure, education, workforce development and community revitalization throughout St. Louis County.
Outside the Legislature, Sen. Williams works with the Construction Career Development Initiative, providing training and job opportunities for underserved youth entering the construction industry. He serves as a board director for People’s Health Centers, where he helped develop a new behavioral health care center for children. He also serves on the advisory boards of St. Louis Crisis Nursery, Simmons Bank, iHeart Media, Nurses for Newborns and the University City Children’s Center. Senator Williams’ family resides in University City, and he is a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.
